The best VPNs that don’t keep logs

Any premium VPN service worth its salt doesn't keep logs, period. However, some providers will claim a no-logs policy but don't have the independent audit to prove it. The best VPNs that don't keep logs have a clean record of not tracking your IP address, browsing history, or connection timestamps. We also considered top VPN services that aren't a part of an Eyes Alliance, meaning they won't be required to submit any records to their respective governments.

How we test and rate VPNs

We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.

Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.

To learn more about how we test, check out our full VPN methodology here.

We also put our top picks to the test and determined the best no-logs VPNs by checking if they met the following criteria:

  • Adheres to a strict no-logs policy
  • Conducts independent audits
  • Privacy-friendly jurisdiction
  • No history of breaking privacy
  • Strong encryption standards
  • Speed and reliability
  • Advanced security features (e.g., kill switch)
  • Multiple devices supported
  • Reasonable pricing

Who it's best for

NordVPN is for anyone who prioritizes security over all else. It's the best VPN provider we've tested, offering robust security features such as military-grade encryption, a kill switch, split tunneling, and more.

Plus, NordVPN is based in Panama, which is a privacy-friendly country, and it has a no-logs policy that's been audited for privacy and security. NordVPN upholds its integrity by undergoing audits annually, and the most recent was conducted at the end of 2024 by Deloitte Audit Lithuania.

What we liked

Security features: NordVPN is the most secure VPN we've tested. It offers advanced security features and specialty servers, including:

  • Dedicated IP address: Works like a standard server that only you can use.
  • Double VPN: Routes traffic through two VPN servers rather than one.
  • Obfuscated servers: Bypass VPN-block firewalls.
  • Onion Over VPN: Combines The Onion Router (Tor) privacy with a VPN.
  • P2P: Optimized for torrenting and large file sharing.
  • NordVPN Threat Protection: Integrated cybersecurity software that blocks ads, trackers, and malicious websites.

Strong encryption: NordVPN offers OpenVPN and WireGuard, the latter of which boasts NordVPN's proprietary NordLynx architecture. NordLynx is designed to enhance your speeds and offer an even more secure connection. In fact, NordVPN is one of the few providers that actually increased our speeds during our in-house testing.

What we didn’t like

Specialty servers are slower: NordVPN is a consistently fast provider overall, but the specialty servers can lag. Connecting to double VPN and Onion over Tor, which have limited servers to start, can be frustrating due to the reduced speeds.

Who it's best for

ProtonVPN is best for anyone who prioritizes privacy and anonymity. Proton VPN is headquartered in Switzerland, a country notable for having the strongest privacy laws around the globe. In July 2024, Securitum, a third-party cybersecurity company, conducted an independent audit of Proton's no-logs policy. Proton passed these tests with flying colors.

Proton VPN also shows its dedication to full transparency by openly sharing details about legal orders it has received and allowing third-party independent audits of its no-logs policy. It also participates in a bug bounty program.

What we liked

Anonymity: Proton VPN boasts ultimate privacy, allowing users to sign up anonymously. To do so, simply create a Proton Mail account or a Proton Pass email alias. You can even use cryptocurrency like Bitcoin (which can't be traced back to you) to subscribe to Proton VPN.

Security: Beyond Proton's no-logs policy and headquarters, it also has robust security features. Like NordVPN, all plans offer AES-256 and xChaCha20x encryption as well as WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols. But with Proton VPN, you'll also get the Stealth protocol, Proton's proprietary protocol, which can avoid detection and assist with bypassing VPN.

Advanced servers: Proton VPN's Secure Core VPN servers can prevent man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks by routing your traffic through multiple servers to ensure the highest level of security. These are hosted in a high-security data center outside of Zurich that requires biometric access.

What we didn’t like

Limited free plan: Despite its many strengths, there are a few areas where Proton VPN falls short. One concern is that the free version has limitations, such as slower speeds, access to servers in only five countries (the U.S., the Netherlands, Romania, Poland, and Japan), and no specialty servers for streaming. These restrictions might make the free version less appealing if you require more versatility and faster speeds.

Dropped speeds: Proton VPN generally offers fast speeds, but during our testing, the VPN dropped our download speeds by an average of 7%. We also noticed inconsistent connection speeds on long-distance servers, which can be frustrating, especially for those who rely on VPNs for bandwidth-intensive activities like streaming or gaming. However, Proton VPN did actually increase our speeds when connected to a U.S. server.

What we liked

Price: PureVPN offers all the standard security features you'd expect in a premium service, like a kill switch and split tunneling, but at a budget price. What makes this VPN stand out from others with the same price point is that PureVPN boasts a large server network, up to twice as many servers as competitors.

Beginner-friendly: We loved that PureVPN has VPN newbies in mind with its robust Learning Center, which features tutorials and online guides to help anyone understand how to get the most out of their service.

What we didn’t like

Server performance: PureVPN doesn't offer speeds or connections that are as reliable as other providers. During our testing, we found that some servers significantly lowered our internet speeds. We also experienced lost connections and had to switch to different servers.

Speed tests

We conduct speed tests with all our VPNs by measuring their baseline speed and then measuring the impact while connected to various server locations.

Of our three best no-logs VPNs, NordVPN was the fastest, though both NordVPN and Proton VPN actually increased our download speeds. PureVPN made our speeds drop, but the decrease is to be expected and not greater than most providers.

VPN speed to U.S. server Normal speed Speed loss
NordVPN 317.52 Mbps 314.19 Mbps 1.06% increase
Proton VPN 391.96 Mbps 389.78 Mbps 0.56% increase
PureVPN 262.38 Mbps 274.53 Mbps 4.43% slower

It's important to review how a VPN impacts your internet speed. Considering the additional encryption to your device, you can expect slower speeds. All three of the options we presented had minimal impact on speed, so you should be able to use your device securely while maintaining good speeds.

How to choose the best VPN

The following features are important to consider when selecting a VPN:

  • Is it within your price range? Consider the subscription term length and how much you'll need to pay up front.
  • How many devices do you need covered?
  • Does it have a no-logs policy, and has that policy been audited by a third party?
  • How many servers and server countries are in its network?
  • Does it offer basic features like a kill switch and split tunneling?
  • What additional features are you looking for in a VPN? Some examples include ad blockers, password managers, and antivirus protection.

Why should you use a no-logs VPN?

Navigating the internet anonymously can be tricky for people who still wish to roam the cyber jungle freely. That’s why it’s crucial to use a private VPN that encrypts your data. Only use VPNs that don’t keep logs as well and back up their zero-logs policy with audits and transparency reports. This is especially true for privacy evangelists and those with the following occupations:

  • Journalists
  • Activists
  • Whistleblowers
  • Government employees
  • Celebrities and influencers
  • Military personnel
  • Healthcare workers
  • Finance and banking professionals
  • IT and cybersecurity specialists
  • Remote workers

VPNs are legal in most countries and are a great option for anyone who wants ultimate privacy on the internet. There are a variety of noteworthy reasons why using the best no-log VPN, which places privacy and security on a high pedestal, is essential for privacy-conscious individuals and those in sensitive lines of work.

  • Conceals your IP address to maintain anonymity
  • Keeps your browsing activity hidden from ISPs
  • Stops malicious hackers from intercepting or snooping on your data
  • Secures your online activity on public Wi-Fi networks (e.g., coffee shops, airports, etc.)
  • Unblocks geo-restricted content and bypasses censorship
  • Shields you from DDoS attacks, swatting, and man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks
  • Protects against targeted ads and tracking
  • Evades government surveillance and censorship, such as the Great Firewall of China

FAQs

Does NordVPN keep logs?

No, NordVPN enforces a strict no-logs policy and has no history of monitoring, collecting, storing, or sharing user activity data so far. Also, NordVPN routinely allows third-party independent auditors to verify its no-logs policy.

Does ExpressVPN keep logs?

As with NordVPN, ExpressVPN also boasts a no-log policy and doesn't maintain user activity logs. Independent audits from third-party cybersecurity companies further support ExpressVPN's dedication to privacy.

Which free VPN has a no-logs policy?

Proton VPN is the best free VPN that offers a no-logs policy. Although its free VPN is limited compared to premium services, it still provides a decent option for those seeking a no-log VPN free of charge. Other free VPNs often come with limitations, such as slower speeds and data caps as well as potential privacy risks.

Can Google track me if I use a VPN?

A VPN can enhance your online privacy, but it's not entirely foolproof against tracking by companies such as Google. To minimize tracking, combine a trustworthy VPN with privacy-focused browsing habits and tracker-blocking tools.
You may also want to consider using privacy-centric search engines such as DuckDuckGo, Startpage, and others. It’s important to do research first and consider any potential risks.

Bottom line: The best anonymous VPNs

We’ve evaluated several VPNs and determined that the best anonymous VPNs that adhere to a strict no-logs policy for utmost privacy are NordVPN, Proton VPN, and PureVPN. They offer top-notch features for security and privacy, are located in privacy-friendly countries, and have had audits of their no-logs policy to verify their claims.

Overall, we think NordVPN is the best because it offers excellent security and privacy features at a good price point.
