We found that BolehVPN doesn't have much going for it as far as price, features, and our test results. Its starting price is equal to ExpressVPN but without standard features like a kill switch, lots of server options, or a true no-logs policy.
On the plus side, BolehVPN can successfully access Netflix U.S. and it has several subscription terms so your commitment can be flexible.
But what else does BolehVPN have going for it? We break down the pros, cons, frustrations, and surprises we found while testing out this lightweight VPN.
- Offers multiple pricing plans including daily, monthly, and yearly
- Passed DNS and WebRTC leak tests
- Works with Netflix US
- Confusing/non-working setup
- Offers few operational options, like auto reconnecting, but little else in the way of features

How we test and rate VPNs
We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.
Once we’ve completed the testing, our editorial rating is calculated by taking into account key features you’d expect from a good product. We score each VPN in the following categories and use a weighted average to calculate the final rating out of 5 stars: price, server count, speed, security, and features.
To learn more about how we test, check out our full VPN methodology here.
We last tested BolehVPN on December 31, 2024.
Our experience
We tested BolehVPN on our laptop running Windows 11. The download was regularly straightforward and we used the same credentials we signed up with to log in to the app.
It's not the most user-friendly dashboard we've seen. On the main dashboard, you'll need to use the "Connect using" drop-down list to pick a server, then select connect. You'll know your connection is active if the "Current Link State" bar is highlighted.
Several VPNs we've tested offer an optimal location server, which is usually the closest server option to you. Unfortunately, BolehVPN doesn't offer anything like this. The servers are all just dumped into a drop-down list without any real organization. Other VPNs we've tested offer maps or lists separated by country.
Several servers would also time out while connecting without an explanation.
There weren’t any features really for us to try, and the only Netflix catalog we could access was in the U.S. Either Netflix detected the VPN or the servers we selected slowed our internet too much for streaming.
Overall, we’d recommend using a more user-friendly product offering more features.
Who is BolehVPN best for?
- Recommended for someone with technical knowledge who doesn’t care about features
BolehVPN isn’t for everyone. If you want many features or need a user-friendly VPN option, this isn’t the VPN for you. If you’re a little more technical and looking for something simple to mask your IP, BolehVPN could be a solution.
We don’t suggest relying on it as your go-to option.
BolehVPN prices and subscriptions
BolehVPN's price ranges from $3.70–$79.99, but it doesn’t offer a traditional subscription model. Instead of purchasing the VPN monthly or annually, you can select subscription lengths. The shortest term is a week, while the longest term is a year.
Purchasing a week could be a way to save money on a VPN, but it’s not economical in the long run. The monthly pricing is on par or slightly cheaper than top-tier competitors.
For instance, NordVPN's one-year plan starts at $4.59/mo (billed annually) and Surfshark's one-year plan starts at $2.99/mo (billed annually). Both VPNs offer thousands of servers, multiple protocol like WireGuard and IKEv2, and standard VPN features like a kill switch and split tunneling.

BolehVPN features
If you’re looking for a feature-rich VPN, BolehVPN is not for you.
We applaud BolehVPN for its security, but when we tested it, there was almost nothing extra save a choice between VPN protocols and a proxy setting. It has a few operational options, like running at startup and auto reconnecting (necessary), but there’s little else.
Server count and countries
- Unlisted servers in unlisted countries
BolehVPN doesn’t list on its site how many servers it has or in how many countries, but it does say they’re “strategically placed.” There's no elaboration on what “strategically placed" means, though.
We thought the only way to view the server list was from the main dashboard with the "Connect using" drop-down. After clicking around, we found that the Service status tab lists all the servers. You can select the "Ping all servers" button to load the latency for all servers.
No-logs policy and headquarters
- BolehVPN logs policy: Some logs
- BolehVPN headquarters: Seychelles
Boleh’s website mentions that it’s outside the Eyes alliance countries and, therefore, isn’t required to hand over any data. It also claims it operates with a no-logs policy. However, when you open the dashboard or check the privacy policy, there are some discrepancies.
BolehVPN does have a logs section on the VPN agent where you can see running session information. What we found alarming, however, was the mention in the privacy policy about how BolehVPN can turn logs on if necessary.
The company mentions that it’s only turned logs on to remove people violating Boleh’s terms and conditions, and that’s only happened a few times. We’re still not in love with the fact that logs can be turned on from Boleh’s end.
Split tunneling
Split tunneling allows you to route some internet traffic through a VPN connection and some without it. BolehVPN doesn’t have this feature.
Kill switch
A kill switch terminates your internet connection if your VPN connection drops, which is key to keeping your information private. BolehVPN doesn’t offer this feature either.
VPN protocols
BolehVPN uses OpenVPN and L2TP protocols. OpenVPN is the default; you should stick with it as its the more secure option.
L2TP is a tunneling protocol that doesn't include encryption or authentication. It can also be slow and has been potentially compromised by the National Security Agency.
BolehVPN test results
Because different people have different reasons for using a VPN, we test a variety of areas.
Speed and security are at the top of our lists. If a VPN is lacking in either area, it’s probably unusable. We make sure that turning the protection on from your VPN doesn’t turn your internet connection into the dial-up of the past century. We also check DNS and WebRTC leaks which can both expose your personal information.
Finally, we check for Netflix compatibility because we know you need your content available and secure no matter where you are.
Speed tests
- Speed test results: BolehVPN slowed our download speeds by an average of 70%
To test BolehVPN for speed, we recorded our internet speed with no VPN connection. Our download speed was 273.32 Mbps, our upload speed was 115.55 Mbps, and our latency was 11 ms.
Once our baseline speed is established, we connect to several servers worldwide to calculate their impact on our download speed, upload speed, and latency.
Test type | No VPN | US to US | US to CA | US to UK | US to AU |
Download speed | 273.32 Mbps | 115.55 Mbps | 127.53 Mbps | 66.75 Mbps | 14.35 Mbps |
Upload speed | 340.90 Mbps | 67.57 Mbps | 67.19 Mbps | 85.66 Mbps | 86.31 Mbps |
Latency (ping) | 11 ms | 66 ms | 67 ms | 123 ms | 287 ms |
Download speed % difference | N/A | -57.72% | -53.34% | -75.58% | -94.75% |
Upload speed % difference | N/A | -80.18% | -80.29% | -74.87% | -74.68% |
Latency % difference | N/A | +500% | +509% | +1,018% | +2,509% |
BolehVPN didn't have a fastest location option, so we opted for the New York server as our U.S. location. It actually dropped our download speed by nearly 58%. Our upload also dropped by 80%.
Although the Canada server was slightly better, the rest of our download speeds decreased significantly more. With the U.K. server, it was impossible to load a Netflix stream. By that point, our latency had increased by over 1,000%, which impacts high bandwidth activities like streaming and gaming.
Netflix tests
- Netflix test results: BolehVPN successfully unblocked Netflix U.S. only
Another essential test is unblocking Netflix. We'll connect to servers worldwide to see if the VPN will circumvent Netflix's geoblocks. This can be useful for streaming something that's not available in your home country.
US to US | US to CA | US to UK | US to AU | |
Did it work with Netflix? |
BolehVPN unblocked Netflix U.S. with ease. The issues started happening with all the servers outside of the U.S.
We tried every Canadian server but Netflix kept showing us the Netflix U.S. library. We even peeked over at the Browser Leaks site but our IP address was listed in Canada.
Then, the U.K. server slowed our speeds so significantly, we couldn't even load a stream after several minutes. We imagine most users wouldn't have the patience to wait this one out.
Finally, Netflix detected every Australian server we tried and blocked us from watching. Beyond Netflix U.S., BolehVPN is a dud for streaming.
DNS leak test
- DNS leak test results: BolehVPN passed its DNS leak test.
You’ve heard of an IP address, the unique identifier for your device, internet service provider, and so on. That’s the language computers use to get from one place to another (like your browser to the Netflix site.)
DNS is the address book that translates human language to computer language and vice versa. A leak can expose your IP address and leave you vulnerable to hackers.
Luckily, our true IP address remained hidden with BolehVPN.
WebRTC leak test
- WebRTC leak test results: BolehVPN passed its WebRTC leak test.
WebRTC is similar, except it relates to video and audio connections. Any time you make a FaceTime call, send a voice message, or log in to a Zoom meeting, you’re using this functionality. Again, leaks within this system can expose your private information to cybercriminals.
We’re happy to report that all of the servers in the BolehVPN trial were secure and kept our data confidential.
Kill switch test
- Kill switch test results: BolehVPN failed its kill switch test.
The final leak test we conduct is the kill switch test. After enabling the kill switch, we'll switch VPN servers to see if our real IP address slips during the change.
Unfortunately, BolehVPN doesn't have a kill switch so we consider this to be an automatic fail.
Compatibility
BolehVPN claims compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. You can also use it on OpenVPN-supported routers like DD-WRT, AsusMerlin-WRT, and Tomato.
In the community section, we saw some people were experiencing leaks with the Linux version. If you have one of these systems, we suggest running a leak test during your trial period to ensure the VPN hides your IP address.

Support topics where Linux DNS leaking was reported.
Customer support
On its main website, BolehVPN claims 24/7 customer support, but we were unable to verify this. We could not access support from the VPN client itself, and when we tried to access some of the support options on the website, we were given an error page.
When we tried to access the support page, it was on our Mac, and no VPN was running. There shouldn’t have been a conflict at all. We aren’t sure why, but 24 hours later, we still cannot access support.
The community forum and the searchable topics were somewhat helpful, but we still couldn’t figure out why the VPN dropped every minute. In the end, we gave up.

FAQs
Is BolehVPN safe?
BolehVPN has good security, but faulty features can make it unsafe. It can also turn on logs at any moment, which made us significantly less secure about using the service.
Can BolehVPN unblock Netflix?
On its website, BolehVPN claims to be able to unblock Netflix in the U.S. only. When we were testing it, we found that it did unblock a Netflix U.S. library.
The site also notes that you should contact support if you have streaming issues, but when we tried to go to the support page, it kicked us back with an error. You'll likely have success if you’re trying to watch Netflix U.S. with BolehVPN. If you’re trying to watch any other region’s catalog, you’ll likely need a different VPN.
What is the most trustworthy VPN?
There are many trustworthy, top-quality VPNs. We recommend NordVPN, Surfshark, CyberGhost, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, and a handful of others.
When shopping for a trustworthy VPN, you should look for a server count of at least 1,000, features like a kill switch, a few VPN protocol options, and compatibility across a variety of devices and operating systems. Coupled with a true no-logs policy, those are the hallmarks of a trustworthy VPN.
Bottom line: Is BolehVPN good?
Because of the connection issues, lack of server transparency, and limited features, we wouldn’t say that BolehVPN is a good VPN. BolehVPN is secure but it's not offering much more at its price point
It does unblock Netflix U.S. and passed its WebRTC and DNS leak tests. However, we suggest skipping it for another, more reliable VPN service like our top alternatives.
