Without giving anything away, it’s highly unlikely that Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix will appear in the sequel. We admit it’s hard to imagine a second “Gladiator” without the iconic Maximus. But, “Gladiator II” is packed with a star-studded cast, and given the box-office success of the first movie, we have a hard time believing that fans won’t clamor to catch “Gladiator II” as soon as it’s available in theaters or to stream.
We watched the trailer to see what we could gather about the “Gladiator” sequel. We know we can expect Denzel Washington to play Macrinus, a ruthless arms dealer who seems to have as much power and sway as the emperor. Pedro Pascal plays Marcus Acacius, a Roman general who trained under Maximus.[2] Paul Mescal plays Lucius, and the second trailer for the film reveals an incredulous secret — Lucius is Maximus’s son. Like father, like son.
While we can’t say for sure, the trailer leaves little doubt that “Gladiator II” will live up to the hype of Ridley Scott’s 2000 masterpiece.
