The best password managers for seniors

Weak, reused, and improperly stored passwords are among the most common ways accounts are hacked and identities stolen. There’s no need to use a faulty product like Google’s password manager or even go as far as to write different passwords down in a book.

All three password managers we’ve chosen offer storage for your logins as well as financial information, secure notes, form fillers, password generators, and plenty of other excellent features that make online activity easier and safer.

How we test and rate password managers

We put every password manager through vigorous hands-on testing by downloading the software to our own devices. We test how the product works on both mobile and desktop, evaluating how well we're able to save, share, and use passwords across a variety of situations.

By taking a fine-tooth comb through all available features and settings, we carefully compare each product using our proprietary grading rubric. The star ratings take into account price, features, extras like cloud storage and data breach alerts, plus looks at security and privacy features like encryption levels and past data breaches.

Who it’s best for

NordPass is ideal for anyone seeking a password manager that can be integrated with other security products, such as cloud storage and a VPN.

If you’re an older adult seeking enhanced security or a family member looking to help increase security, this is a great choice for a password manager. All of Nord’s products are kept in a single dashboard, so there’s no need to worry about switching between the bundled products. It’s all easily accessible and at your fingertips.

What is a VPN?

VPNs help secure your internet connection by encrypting your data and masking your IP address. VPNs are especially helpful if you use an unsecured Wi-Fi connection — or if you simply want to maintain your privacy online and block advertisers from tracking you.

What we liked

We appreciate that Nord offers a unified dashboard for all products, which can be expanded into individual service dashboards. It’s clean and organized and works well for anyone who has technology anxiety.

Looking at passwords in NordPass

Because of the amount of information that can be stored in NordPass, it can serve as a secure vault for various personal items, including your Social Security administration credentials, bank account information, digital copies of important documents, and any other digital files you’d like to protect.

NordPass offers many of the same features as other password managers, including a password generator that helps ensure none of your passwords are weak or reused.

NordPass on-page password generator

The compatibility with various operating systems and browsers enables seniors to sync across all devices. For example, this eliminates frustration when you’re trying to sign into your mobile banking on your phone, especially if you also have the account on your laptop.

Since many people own a variety of devices — including Apple, Samsung, Windows, and Android — NordPass’s compatibility bridges the gap, eliminating frustration with logins.

What we didn’t like

The free version is limited to a single device, meaning that to enjoy all the syncing benefits, you’ll need to pay for a subscription. Many older Americans are on fixed incomes, and this could be a hindrance to using a service like NordPass.

Who it’s best for

RoboForm is ideal for individuals seeking a comprehensive suite of features to complement their password manager. In addition to the regular features included in most password managers, like form fillers and password generators, RoboForm offers a master password restore in case you forget the master password for your RoboForm account.

Additionally, RoboForm offers a password change history. This way, you can see the metrics of your password history. This can help determine if an account has been hacked, allowing you to move quickly to change the credentials and secure your account.

We also liked RoboForm’s customer service options. Many older adults aren’t comfortable with email or self-help guides. RoboForm offers live chat, phone support, and email support via a support ticket. The variety of support options should fit anyone’s comfort level.

What we liked

We appreciate the extra features and variety of customer support options available from RoboForm. During our testing, we found the live chat experience was positive.

RoboForm offered a simple and intuitive setup that imported our passwords from other places where they were stored. This made it extremely easy to begin using RoboForm right away. It also helped us remove our passwords from Chrome, as Google’s password manager isn’t considered secure.

Another bonus was the fact that RoboForm has never suffered a data breach. Not all of these services can claim that honor. Hacked password managers can release all of your most personal details, so put that on your list of things to check for when shopping for password management software.

What we didn’t like

Although the customer service options are robust, we weren’t the biggest fans of the ticketing method RoboForm uses for support. It took us almost 11 hours to receive an initial response. To respond, we had to log back into our RoboForm portal rather than being able to email back directly. This is less than ideal.

If you’re trying to access an account or need to access your personal information quickly, waiting this long could become a problem.

It was all very cumbersome and somewhat outdated. We also noted that the free plan lacks key features such as access on all devices, which is why we recommend one of the paid plans for RoboForm.

Password Manager
Dashlane
  • Seamless autofill and form filling
  • Paid plans come with Hotspot Shield VPN
  • Extra features boost security

Who it’s best for

Dashlane is a great choice for anyone seeking a free password manager with robust features. Whether you’re on a fixed income or aren’t sure you want to commit to a monthly subscription, Dashlane’s free version offers a lot.

What we liked

We liked that Dashlane offered almost all of its features with the free product. There is a limitation on the number of passwords you can save, but for individuals looking to protect only sensitive information, such as bank accounts and Social Security logins, this could be a suitable solution.

Dashlane dashboard on the get started tab with a checklist

If you do decide to upgrade, we appreciate that the paid version offers Hotspot Shield VPN and unlimited password storage. Sometimes, VPNs with numerous features can be intimidating, so having a simpler version is a great way to enhance your security.

Many competitors offer the digital legacy feature only with paid subscriptions, but Dashlane provides it with its free product. It also includes password health scores. If Dashlane detects a compromised or reused password, it’ll prompt you and assist you in resolving the issue. Overall, it’s an intuitive and useful product.

What we didn’t like

All of these free features are only available on one device; to get more, you’ll need a paid plan. If you want unlimited passwords, you’ll also need a paid subscription, as Dashlane restricts storage to 25 passwords.

Also, we found the privacy policy a little confusing. Dashlane shares passwords with “affiliates,” but we are unsure whether these are internal or third-party affiliates. There’s no clarification for this in the privacy policy.
