How we test and rate VPNs
We complete standardized hands-on tests for each VPN we review so we can put their claims to the test. This includes vigorous third-party testing by comparing our internet speed while connected to different servers, checking for DNS leaks, making sure the kill switch actually works, and more. We also make sure we can comfortably access popular streaming sites, like Netflix, and still do our day-to-day work without interruption.

Our experience
During our installation, setup, and testing, we found that TorGuard doesn't provide the most intuitive service.
After logging in to the portal, we couldn't find any clear section where we were meant to download the service. It was only after hitting the support tab from the menu bar that we saw a button for Downloads. From here, we just needed to select our operating systems and download the app.
We were frustrated while testing different server locations. TorGuard doesn't allow you to switch from one server to another, so you'll need to manually disconnect, select a server, and reconnect every time you want a new connection.
We also found that the settings weren't very user-friendly, as we had trouble finding the kill switches. They were listed on two different tabs, and the text was quite small on these tabs.
We did like that TorGuard includes some features that usually come at an additional cost, like dedicated IP addresses and a router with the highest tier plans. However, it didn't provide the smoothest testing experience, so it could be a hassle for VPN beginners.
Who is TorGuard VPN best for?

Just note that TorGuard is based in the U.S., which is part of the Five Eyes alliance. We also couldn't find any third-party audits, so it'd be best to look elsewhere if you're seeking a strong dedication to privacy.

TorGuard VPN has a strict no-logs policy, meaning it does not collect user activity data. When a VPN does not log data, it doesn’t collect information to give law enforcement or government officials, ensuring your online activities remain private.
The location of a VPN’s headquarters is important because it determines whether the VPN is subject to data retention laws. If a VPN is headquartered in a country with strict data retention laws, it is more likely to be forced to turn over subscriber data.
On the other hand, a VPN headquartered in a country with more relaxed data retention laws will have more privacy protections. Since TorGuard is headquartered in the U.S., it's not subject to the same data retention laws as other countries.
However, the U.S. is part of the Five Eyes alliance, an intelligence-sharing agreement between the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. This means that the U.S. can collect and store internet activity from your internet service provider (ISP), third-party surveillance, or activity trackers — something to consider when selecting VPNs headquartered in the U.S.
We'd love to see TorGuard complete a third-party audit of its no-logs policy. This would assure its users that TorGuard's no-logs policy is more than just for show.
Kill switch
TorGuard VPN’s kill switch features automatically block data from leaving your device if you lose your connection. This ensures that sensitive data will not be exposed if your connection is interrupted (keeping your data private).
It offers two options: a network-level kill switch (called “Network Kill Switch”), which completely shuts off internet access when the VPN connection is lost, and an application-level kill switch (called “App Kill Switch”), which only blocks selected applications. Both are designed to protect your privacy from accidental data leakage and ensure your online activities remain secure.
Dedicated IP address
TorGuard VPN offers a dedicated IP address with its Pro and Premium plans. A dedicated IP address is a unique IP address that isn't shared with any other users. This ensures that you have your own secure and private connection.
Additionally, having a dedicated IP address allows you to access websites and services that require a static IP address. Dedicated IPs also allow you to bypass many restrictions imposed by network administrators or ISPs.
Working with TorGuard VPN's dedicated IP address was incredibly useful for us. It allowed us to securely access geo-restricted content, bypass restrictions imposed by network administrators or ISPs, and access websites and services requiring a static IP address. As a result, investing in the Anonymous VPN Pro plan is definitely worth it for its added security and flexibility.

We ran a series of speed tests to evaluate TorGuard VPN performance and check their servers’ reliability. We also tested their connection security by monitoring their no-logs policy. Testing VPNs is important for determining their speed, reliability, and security, as these are all important factors to consider when choosing the best VPN for your needs.
Speed tests

We conducted the TorGuard VPN speed test to evaluate VPN performance when connecting to different servers worldwide. We tested our baseline internet speed on a Lenovo laptop running Windows 11 from a physical location in the U.S.

Our speed test showed nearly a 20% decline in download speeds when connected to a nearby U.S. This didn't much impact our browsing, but the much larger drops started happening with the other servers.
Every other server we tested dropped our download speeds by 50% to 65%. Our latency also increased significantly, which could lead to increased buffering while streaming or increased lag while gaming.
Keep in mind that this significant decrease in speeds could be due to the distance of the servers from our location, the processing power of the device used for testing, or ISP throttling, which is known to affect speeds and bandwidth. We were connected to the Spectrum network (notable for throttling) while conducting the test, which could explain the significant discrepancy in download speeds.
Overall, TorGuard VPN had a satisfactory performance because connecting to different server locations was almost instantaneous, and browsing the web was generally a smooth experience.
The speed test results show that the download speeds decrease when connecting to a server outside the user's local area, but the connection does remain steady and reliable. Moreover, there were no lagging or buffering issues while streaming Netflix, which highlights the VPN’s solid performance.
Netflix tests

When using the TorGuard VPN to watch Netflix, we experienced seamless playback without any lag or buffering issues while accessing the service with U.S. and Canadian servers. Although the Netflix webpage initially timed out for us while connected to the U.K. server, we were able to get it to load once we swapped to another server in the same country.

However, we encountered difficulties accessing Netflix while connected to TorGuard’s Australia servers. No matter which one we selected, Netflix detected TorGuard and blocked us from streaming.
DNS leak test

When running a DNS leak test on TorGuard VPN after selecting server in Atlana, TorGuard VPN passed. It showed a DNS server from Atlanta, Georgia, rather than our true location.
A Domain Name System (DNS) leak occurs when a user's device accidentally sends DNS requests to a third-party DNS server instead of the VPN's secure DNS server. This exposes users’ browsing data (e.g., visited websites and other online activities) to their ISP. It can even reveal the user's real IP address and location, compromising their privacy and security.
WebRTC leak test

Testing a VPN's ability to protect your personal information and remain anonymous is an important step to ensure security and peace of mind. The TorGuard VPN Pro passed the WebRTC leak test with flying colors.
After selecting a server om Atlanta, the test didn't reveal any DNS requests outside the VPN tunnel. This is an important piece of information and proves that TorGuard VPN can provide the highest level of user privacy and anonymity.

Kill switch test

A kill switch will prevent unencrypted data from traveling over an unsecured connection, keeping you safe from malicious actors. TorGuard has both a network kill switch and an app kill switch.
We tested the app kill switch first, but TorGuard closed Chrome as soon as we connected to a new server. That's because TorGuard doesn't allow you to switch from one server to another without disconnecting.
Then we toggled on the network kill switch. As soon as we disconnected from our Atlanta server connection, TorGuard revealed our real location and IP address.
Although the app kill switch worked like it was supposed to, it's probably overkill for regular VPN users.
